AKOYA CULTURED PEARLS are saltwater pearls produced in Japan by the oyster known by its scientific name PINCTADA FUCUTA.
The main body color is mostly white , cream, silver and often times have rose or blue overtones. Akoya Pearl harvesting is a very delicate yet a very exciting time for all pearl people. Among all the oysters in the pearl farms less than 50% survive the culturing process and only the top 5% is considered high quality pearls. In Japan, the harvesting usually takes place during the winer month as the cold water tends to yield better nacre quality and have shown a better harvest overall. Once the harvesting is completed the pearls are
sorted according to shape, size, luster and other quality before they are delivered to the marketplace. Sizes range from 2mm to 10mm the most popular sizes are between 6mm to 8mm.
